Why the nightstand has a face-down pile

Some books live spine-out. The ones that undo you live face-down, cover hidden, as if the nightstand were a room with a door.

People call those books spicy and then apologise, as if the apology were the interesting part. It isn't. The interesting part is that you wanted a place where the apology wasn't required.
